2020: Hope vs Hopelessness and Looking Forward

2020 has been a year of contrasts.

On the one hand, we’ve watched the suffering of so many of our friends, community members, and businesses as they’ve struggled and persisted during this extremely challenging year. We’ve also seen the exhaustion that many have felt during this seemingly endless pandemic and hope has gradually been depleted.

On the other hand, our years of experience in working remotely launched us into many new relationships, providing solutions for clients who needed to quickly reorganize in order to keep their businesses afloat or to take advantage of the increasing need for online experiences of their services. These clients inspired hope in us through their courage and resilience, as well as their focus and determination to work collaboratively to find a way forward.

These are a few of the clients in this position who we’ve worked with in 2020:

Heaven Can Wait – a First Aid provider who recognized that people are still in need of effective First Aid training, even during this time of limited gatherings. They turned their training model upside down and PathWise worked closely with them to create a blended online solution that provides core training online with short, limited capacity in-person sessions for practical assessments as conditions made this possible. Take a look at the promo video we created for the course below:

HONE Consulting – a provider of workplace training on leadership and respectful workplace environments. Recognizing that the status quo of providing face-to-face workshop training would be impacted, HONE brought PathWise on board to facilitate the creation of online training to meet the needs of their clients.

BCcampus Peer Support Worker Training – COVID has impacted some of our community members much more than others. During 2020, deaths due to drug overdoses spiked, with much of this related to the closure of various safe injection sites. This tragedy has not stopped Peer Support Workers from actively engaging in a project that is creating training to help educate employers and other Peer Support Workers about their roles in supporting our community members that are struggling with substance use, mental health, or other challenging life experiences.

Another exciting project that we worked on in 2020 was the development of a series of short eLearning modules on remote work best practices in order to help people adjust to working remotely. Remote work is something that we have done for many years, so we’ve been very excited to share our learning with those who were abruptly dropped into this type of work due to COVID-19.

On a company level, we’ve been growing, adding new team members and taking on Technical Writing student interns in a partnership with BCIT and working on many other exciting projects and plans, which gives us a sense of moving forward and of hope.

Above all, in 2020, we’ve continued to build on our mission to help companies and organizations continue to build their capacity to serve our communities. And we’re hopeful that together we will all find ways to make the world a better place in 2021!
